This week on the podcast, I’m chatting with the founder of American Power Yoga and Simplified Genetics, Kurt Johnsen. Kurt is based out of Dallas, and he shares the story of creating American Power Yoga over 15 years ago.
Kurt came to yoga from kung fu, and he took what he learned from his background in martial arts to create American Power Yoga. He didn’t have a formal yoga teacher training and he hardly had any experience in the yoga industry, yet he was successfully able to create a studio that grew to be quite big.
On this episode, Kurt shares the process of creating, growing and selling American Power Yoga, what he learned through running American Power Yoga, and the biggest business lessons he’s learned through his career. We also chat about his new company Simplified Genetics, including where the idea came from, what it was like to start the business, and how it’s grown over the last 2 years.
Enjoy!

Have you ever caught yourself comparing yourself to the other people in the room while practicing yoga? Have you thought that maybe you’re not good enough because you don’t have enough Instagram followers? Have you thought about giving up on your business because your website doesn’t look as good as your yoga teacher friend’s does?
I’ve been there.
On this episode, I’m sharing the danger of comparison and how comparison can truly be “the thief of joy”, if we allow it to be so. I share a few personal examples of where comparison has popped up in my personal and professional life and how I have learned to shift my perspective on comparison.
I don’t think it’s possible to ever truly rid your life of comparison, but it is certainly possible to shift the way that you interpret comparison and deal with it. This is obviously easier said than done, and I chat about a few tips for beginning to learn to identify when you are comparing yourself to others, why you are doing it, how to cope with it, and how to turn it into an opportunity to improve yourself.
Enjoy!
