Teaching Yoga Online with Eileen McGurty from Great Online Teaching

This week on the podcast I am joined by Eileen McGurty from Great Online Teaching. Taking your yoga business online is a great additional source of revenue, and a great way for people to discover you from anywhere in the world, but it can also feel really, really complicated.

On this episode, Eileen shares how to plan out great content for your target market, how to make sure the content your filming will resonate with your audience, tips on equipment and how to get good lighting and sound, marketing your course once it’s out there, and how to get over the perfectionism mentality and just put it out there.

Enjoy!

Business Lessons from this Episode:

  • You have to go out of your way to construct the virtual classroom
  • When you’re teaching online you want to teach shorter lessons
  • Tell people what they are going to learn beforehand
  • Don’t rely on people watching you – audio is really key
  • Have text based support so that students can interact with the lessons
  • Before you start filming, you want to clearly articulate what you want your students to be able to do by the end of the course
  • What can the student do after each piece of the sequence or course
  • You want to figure out action-based results and build the course around that
  • Our attention spans are short so make each of your video segments short – 2-15 minutes depending on the topic
  • When you’re filming asana videos, you could upwards of 45 minutes, but get clear on who your target market is and what you want them to achieve
  • Cut anything that isn’t absolutely necessary for what you are trying to teach your students
  • The content in your course will be shaped by who your target market is
  • Always add additional materials – just audio of a sequence, visual aids, check lists, schedules, etc. are very helpful to your students (account for all the learning styles!)
  • You don’t need any elaborate equipment – Do you have enough light? Is your audio good?
  • You can use any camera as long as your lighting is good enough that people can actually see you
  • Editing always takes 3 times as long as you expect, but it gets faster and easier the more you do it
  • Don’t worry about making your course perfect – you can always change it!
  • People connect with authenticity so give up trying to be perfect and just try to share something authentically
  • When it comes to pricing, think about what people will be willing to pay, not how many hours you put into it
    • Focus on the value, not the time
  • Attract an audience and then nurture your audience
  • Always make sure you delight your customers, even after you’ve made the sale
  • Just jump in and do it if it’s something you’ve been thinking about and wanting to do!
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
