This week on the podcast I am joined by Megan Mulrine from Yoga Trotter. Megan is a yoga teacher, a yoga teacher trainer, and a digital nomad. Megan joined me from Bali, Indonesia to talk about the Hindu Gods, Goddesses and Deities that are important to the history of yoga and yoga asana.

On this episode, we talk about the importance of learning about the Gods, Godesses and Deities that are a part of yoga history and philosophy, and how we can integrate them into our practice and classes without it coming across as religious practice or cultural appropriation. We also talk about Megan’s business, including her 50-hour YTT that she runs on the Gods of Yoga, what digital nomad life is like, how to make our offerings more financially sustainable without making them free, and more.

Enjoy!

Discussed in this episode:
  • How Megan got into yoga
  • What it was like to live and teach yoga in Hiroshima, Japan
  • What brought Megan to Bali and why she decided to open her business there
  • A lot of our asana poses are named after Hindu Gods and we aren’t often taught about this in yoga teacher trainings
  • Why “God” doesn’t have to have a religious connotation
  • Yoga as a Religion by Andrea Ferretti
  • We can understand cultural mishaps and cultural “appropriation” when we understand the history and where things come from better
  • The stories told in yoga are sharing a philosophy oh how to live life and to be a better human and this is a good way to think of them as you begin to learn about them and integrate them into your teaching
  • If you are worried about offending the people you are teaching, you can draw themes and lessons from the deities, without mentioning anything about the Gods
  • We should give people the benefit of the doubt that they often do want to dive deeper and learn more about the practice
  • If you can tell the story behind a pose, it can help a student get into a little deeper and understand a deeper purpose behind why we practice
  • Ramesh Menon’s books
  • How do we add in more yoga philosophy when people are paying for the physical aspect of it?
  • An advanced practice of yoga isn’t entirely about the physical practice and what you can do with your body from a physical side of things
  • The realities of being a digital nomad – it’s basically just working full time but in a cool location than where you’re from!
  • Why Megan loves being able to live and work from anywhere in the world
  • We need to find a balance between getting paid what we feel that we deserve and offering our teachings for free – we need to get out of lack mindset and value what we offer
  • Offering a sliding scale or a pay as you can to make it more accessible to everyone can be a good alternative to offering your classes and programs for free
  • The Gods of Yoga ebook
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
