This week on the podcast I am joined by Jeremy Pollack. Jeremy is a psychologist/anthropologist and a leading expert in conflict resolution. His passion and mission are to help individuals and groups navigate both intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts, and on this episode we tackle conflict resolution for yoga teachers.
We dive into how to have tough conversations as a leader / business owner, as well as how to navigate challenges with coworkers, work on communication, and tips for dealing with challenging situations on a day-to-day basis.

Enjoy!

Discussed in this episode:
  • Conflict happens anytime you get a group together in a space trying to make decisions together
  • Conflict can be a good force for innovation as long as it’s managed properly
  • You want to handle conflict in a positive way and it’s important to learn how to manage conflict, especially when you are a business owner or in a leadership role because conflict trickles down
  • A major part of conflict resolution is communication! As a leader / business owner, you need to know how to communicate well.
  • Non-violent Communication by Dr. Marshall Rosenberg is a great resource for learning to communicate
  • Most of us haven’t learned how to communicate well, especially during conflict, so it’s very difficult to navigate these types of feelings, emotions and situations
  • Don’t let things fester and build in you!
  • You want to let go of your ego so that you can communicate with people without being defensive
  • When you are dealing with conflict, you need to create a safe place for people to talk
  • It’s important to head off conflict as soon as possible by communicating
  • Communicating feels in the moment is great IF you can identify them
  • It takes a lot of self awareness to know when something is about the other person and when it’s about you
  • Listen Empathize Apologize Fix
  • “Your feelings matter and I’m sorry” – a genuine apology goes a long way!
  • “I’m sorry you feel that way” is not a genuine apology – it comes across as very condescending
  • After you apologize, ask them how you can fix it or do something differently in the future
  • If you are a mediator of a conflict, you have to take the stance of a neutral so that the space is safe for both parties
  • Once both parties have had their chance to talk, ask them what their big takeaways are and how they can move forward from there
  • Daily meditation is a key way to stay self aware
  • At the end of each day, do a little recap of how you’re feeling – journal about what’s going on each day and how you’re feeling
  • Peace starts from within – if you aren’t at peace from within you may have a hard time getting peace in the external aspects of your life
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!

Head on over to analuisa.com/mbom and treat yourself (because you’re worth it!).
