This week on the podcast I am joined by Amy McDonald from the Abundant Yoga Teacher. Amy joined me all the way from Australia, where she runs a business helping yoga teacher create abundant and successful yoga businesses. She runs yoga retreats around the world, and also has her own podcast, The Abundant Yoga Teacher.

On this episode, Amy and I dive into all things yoga business! We talk about what she learned running a (at home) yoga studio, tips for running a successful yoga retreat, why it’s okay to mix business and spirituality, why we deserve to make bank, tips for new yoga teachers and more!

Enjoy!

Business Lessons from this Episode:

  • Being a yoga studio owner is a lot more work than you might expect!
  • It’s possible to blend other skills you have with teaching yoga, like business, marketing, graphic design, etc.
  • You can still fill a retreat with a bad poster!
  • You need to approach retreats as a business project, not as a vacation
  • Be smart when it comes to retreat planning – look at your margins and how much you want to make. Do backwards budgeting so that you understand how much you need to charge and how many people you need to make your financial goal.
  • Blending business and spirituality and how we can do it ethically
  • It’s good for the planet when yoga teachers make bank!
  • Only offer things that you feel excited and lit up about
  • If you don’t feel obsessed with what you do, what do you need to do to be obsessed and in love with your offerings?
  • Get out of your own drama about being visible
  • Everyone deserves to have great terms and conditions around what you offer, especially if it’s a big price point
  • Don’t take on other people’s crap!
  • “If you try to please everyone, you please no one”
  • Get a work visa if you’re going to teach abroad
  • Don’t be cheap when it comes to setting up liability, insurance, taxes, etc.
  • Surround yourself by other yoga teachers and create a community for yourself
  • Teach as much as you can to whoever you can
  • Discover your own authentic voice as a yoga teacher
  • There is value out of teaching opportunities outside of making money
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
