This week on the podcast I am joined by Shannon Roche. Shannon is the new CEO of Yoga Alliance and she joins the show to talk about how Yoga Alliance is working to improve standards with the goal of providing more value to yoga teachers and yoga students.

Since Yoga Alliance released the news about their new standards for teacher trainings there has been some confusion and a lot of questions in the community, so I wanted to take this opportunity to ask your questions, as well as mine. Shannon and I talk about the changes coming down the pipe for Yoga Alliance, what we can expect from Yoga Alliance, what Yoga Alliance does for yoga teachers, how we can help uphold the standards in the yoga community, and more.

Enjoy!

Discussed in this episode:
  • Shannon’s background as a yoga practitioner and why she was excited about working with Yoga Alliance
  • How do updated YA standards affect currently registered yoga teachers?
    • First, standards changes don’t apply retroactively. So if the school you attended for YTT loses Yoga Alliance certification, that doesn’t affect your ability to be registered.
    • As of February 2022, in order to be a lead trainer, one needs to hold an ERYT 500.
  • Changes to Yoga Alliance’s accountability processes, requiring more information from yoga teacher trainings to verify that all YA certified trainings are delivering high-quality education to their students.
  • YA adding a pedagogy course as part of the lead trainer application to ensure that YTT curriculums provide a high level of education to students.
  • YA’s two initial priorities with updating standards and two initial problems they are focused on solving:
    • 1. Make sure that the YA credential is offering what it says it is offering. For example, making sure that all 200hr trainings are 200hr of instruction and eliminating edge cases of training with contact and non-contact hours.
    • 2. Make sure that the differences between the levels of certification are clear (200hr vs 500hr).
  • Regulating online components of YTT:
    • When new standards go into effect, for RYS200 programs, up to 20 hours of anatomy, physiology, and yoga humanities can be taught online.
  • Adding a re-credentialing process every three years for YA certified yoga teacher trainings.
  • Why is it important that yoga teachers register with Yoga Alliance and what do they get from it?
  • How yoga teachers can communicate and share feedback with Yoga Alliance.
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
