019: My 1 Year Teaching Anniversary & What I’ve Learned as a Yoga Teacher

Are you thinking about doing a yoga teacher training? Do you want to become a yoga teacher? Have you recently completed your teacher training and are feeling a bit uncertain? This episode is for you!

The beginning of May marked my one year teaching anniversary, and I decided to celebrate that by having my boyfriend and travel podcast co-host, Ryan, interview me on what the last year has been like for me, and how becoming a yoga teacher has changed my life. We talk about what inspired me to become a yoga teacher, what I’ve learned in the last year of teaching, what yoga has taught me about myself, and much more. I share the biggest business lessons I’ve learned through my personal journey as a teacher, and through people I’ve met and talked to along the way.

Enjoy!

Business Lessons

  • Redefine failure for yourself
  • Go into a teacher training program with an open mind (a beginner’s mind!)
  • Find the right teacher training program for YOU – what was right for me might not be right for you!
  • Playing it cool doesn’t work if you’re trying to find a teaching job
  • You will never feel ready to teach your first class
  • Tell people that you want to teach!!
  • Don’t look for feedback from your students while you’re teaching
  • Push through your fears
  • Not everyone is going to like you and your teaching style
  • People show up to practice for different reasons, and you may not be the teacher that someone needs in that moment
  • Stop trying to please people, and just be yourself
  • Be prepared to audition if you want a job at a studio!
  • Learn to make yoga accessible to every single person who comes to your class
  • Teach for your students – this is really hard when you’re new!
  • You’ll know everything that you need to know when you need to know it
  • Be yourself, not the teachers around you
  • Imitate, integrate, innovate
  • Continue to practice consistently
  • Meet yoga studio owners instead of sending blind emails
  • Find private clients and charge them a lower rate
  • Never pretend like you know it all – you don’t (and probably never will)
  • Push yourself outside of your comfort zone
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
