038: Digging Deeper into the Business of Yoga with Laura Fraser

Laura Fraser is a yoga teacher for Power Yoga Canada, works in marketing, and is passionate about calligraphy. She also runs a website called Little Black Leggings, where she explores the marketing + business side of yoga.

When I stumbled across her website, I knew I needed to interview her. On this episode, Laura shares her journey as a yoga teacher, and how because she never felt like teaching a ton of classes was right for her, she’s branched out to pursue her other passions alongside yoga – marketing + calligraphy. We also dive deep into the business of yoga, from finding your rate as a private yoga teacher, to getting comfortable asking for money, to developing your authentic brand online and learning to turn your social media into a story of who you are.

Enjoy!

Business Lessons:

  • Only teach as many classes as you can lend your energy to – that may not mean 15-25 classes a week!
  • The goal is to work towards the most authentic version of yourself
  • You have to share authentically, and create an image of yourself that is true to you
  • Be honest with yourself about what feels right for you – it may be kids yoga, privates, group classes, etc.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask the questions that may make you seem “un-yoga”
  • It’s important to find a balance between the business side of yoga + the teaching side of yoga
  • Don’t doubt your self or compare yourself when you set a price for your privates
  • We need to get past the idea that we can’t ask for money
  • Find a balance where you know what you’re worth + also find opportunities where you can give back (teach for free, teach for a cause, etc.)
  • Thinking about how we can create businesses around this thing that we love!
  • Look at how everything comes together on your website and with your social media
  • Clean up and scale back – make things simple
  • Clean up your social media so that it tells a consistent story about what you’re about
  • Be intentional with what you put online
  • Have an online presence, even if its only a landing page or Facebook page
  • If you spend more time staging a social media shot than practicing yoga, it may not be authentic – figure out what works for you
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
