030: Taylor Harkness on Being an Authentic Yoga Teacher

On this episode of the podcast, Taylor Harkness shares his journey as a yoga teacher, how his career has evolved over the years and all of the business lessons he’s learned along the way. We talk about everything from managing a yoga studio, running retreats, to social media, and how to do it all while being your authentic self.

This is one of my absolute favorite conversations that I’ve had about yoga, so don’t miss this episode!

Business Lessons

  • Try, try again – you can always try a pose in a different way
  • Teach for free – you never know who will pick up what you’re putting down!
  • Teach private classes as much as you can so that you can watch people’s bodies
  • Show up for each individual person that is in your class
  • Teach as much as you can, but stay humble in it – admit what you don’t know
  • Take time to do things that aren’t yoga
  • Always be a “yay” for teaching yoga!
  • There is a difference between loving the practice of yoga and teaching yoga
  • Allow your career to grow organically
  • If you want to own a yoga studio, you need to have a business mind OR you need to find someone to do that for you
  • Taxes are a real thing when you are a studio owner and a yoga teacher
  • Allow retreats to come organically and find a place that you truly love
  • You can never make everyone happy!
  • Be yourself on social media
  • Everything in moderation
  • And much more… Here’s the episode!
